Houston has experienced a tragic series of traffic crashes, with at least seven people reportedly killed during a 31-hour period as authorities investigate several serious collisions across the area.
The crashes occurred between Friday evening and early Sunday morning, involving major roads and highways as well as residential areas. Several other people were also reported injured, with some suffering critical injuries.
Series of Fatal Crashes Across Houston
One of the crashes occurred on I-45 North, where a pickup truck reportedly collided with a sedan that was changing lanes. A 32-year-old driver in the sedan was killed in the crash. Investigators were looking into whether excessive speed contributed to the collision.
A separate crash near Westheimer involved a motorcycle and a car. The 27-year-old motorcyclist died after the vehicle reportedly turned left in front of him. Investigators were examining whether the driver failed to yield.
Another serious collision happened on Beltway 8, involving four vehicles. Two people were reportedly killed after a suspected impaired driver struck another vehicle at high speed, triggering a chain-reaction crash. The driver was reported to be facing intoxication manslaughter charges.
Pedestrian and Wrong-Way Crashes
In southwest Houston, a 14-year-old pedestrian was reportedly struck and killed by an SUV while walking home. The driver remained at the scene and reportedly told investigators that he did not see the teenager until it was too late.
The final crash in the reported 31-hour period occurred around 1 a.m. Sunday on Highway 59. Authorities said a wrong-way driver was involved in a head-on collision that killed two people. Another person was critically injured.
Police were also investigating whether alcohol played a role in that crash.
What Investigators Are Looking Into
The separate crashes are being investigated individually, but the incidents have brought attention to several factors commonly associated with fatal collisions.
Speeding, suspected impaired driving, failure to yield, distracted driving, and wrong-way driving have all been mentioned in connection with the reported crashes.
